Crumb cake calories

A calorie is a measure of energy. It can be defined as the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of water by one degree. Food and beverages, all contain calories. The USDA daily-recommended caloric intake for the average American maintaining their weight is 2,000 calories. Simple crumb cakes have around 220 calories (2oz slice). It would hardly hurt/impact a weight loss plan, if any. Either way, it's the calories and foods that are part of a regular daily diet that matters.


Crumb cake recipe

Butter 3 tbsp
Sugar ½ cup
Egg 1 no
Flour 1 ½ cup
Baking powder 2 tsp
Milk 2/3 cup

Take a small bowl, transfer butter and sugar. These should be creamed together (creaming) using electric mixer or by hand until light and fluffy. For best results, the process of creaming, an important first step in baking cakes, should really take 8-10 minutes to complete.

Stop creaming when the mixture becomes light in color and fluffy in texture. Add the egg gradually. Next, add milk, baking powder and flour. Spread in a greased 9x13 inch pan.


Crumb mixture

Flour 2 cups
Sugar 1 cup
Butter 2 sticks
Cinnamon 2 tbsp

Take a separate bowl to prepare crumb mixture. Butter should be rubbed into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse fresh breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar into the flour/butter mixture until evenly distributed. Add the remaining ingredients. Drop the mixture over the batter. Bake at 350 degree for 25 minutes.


Apple crumb cake recipe

Autumn is a time when fresh apples are everywhere. This simple apple crumb cake is especially nice when fresh, juicy apples are aplenty. Bake this apple crumb cake recipe and serve warm with tea or coffee.

Apples 2
Brown sugar ¾ cup
Butter 4 tbsp
Egg 1 no
Vanilla essence 1 tsp
Ground cinnamon 1 tsp
Sour cream ½ cup
Flour 1 cup
Baking soda ½ tsp

Take a 10 x 6.5 square inch pan and spread butter evenly. Set it aside. Take a small bowl and cream sugar and butter until fluffy. Add the egg gradually. Next, the vanilla essence, flour, baking soda, cinnamon and then the sour cream.

Mix well. Ensure there are no lumps. Peel and slice the apples. Add the apples and mix. Pour the mixture into the square pan and spread evenly.


Ingredients for crumble topping

Light brown sugar ½ cup
Flour ½ cup
Butter 4 tbsp
Ground cinnamon 1 tsp

Take a separate bowl and mix all the ingredients. Mix until you notice the crumbs forming. The mixture should resemble coarse fresh breadcrumbs. Spread the 'crumbs' over the cake batter. Preheat oven to 350-degree Fahrenheit. Bake for 30 minutes. When the cake is finished, top it with a few sliced apples as a finishing touch.

Variation:Substitute apple with fruits like peach or apricot or orange or pumpkin apple, pineapple. Add 1/2 to one cup chopped apple, dates, prunes, raisins, apricots, figs, blueberries, cranberries, cheese, nuts. Change 1/2 cup of the flour to corn meal, bran, wheat germ, rye, oatmeal or leftover cooked cereal.


Crumb cake muffins

Muffin is a small loaf of bread baked in a shallow, round pan. Unlike traditional loaves of bread, muffins generally have more butter and sugar in them. The top of the muffin ought to be larger than the bottom of the muffin. Crumb topping adds that extra zing to already delicious muffin recipes. There are few vital points to remember while making crumb cake muffins.


  • Muffin batter should be stiff enough to hold a spoon upright.

  • Ensure muffin batter has flour to liquid ratio of 2:1.

  • Whisk together all dry ingredients/ all liquid ingredients.

  • Grease the entire muffin tin generously.

  • Fill muffin tins three-quarters full.

  • Never over-bake the muffins.

  • If fruits, nuts or chips are used, give them light flour dusting.

  • Beat eggs well. The more you beat the eggs, the lighter muffins will be.

Crumb cake muffins recipe

Cake flour 1 ¼ cup (Cake flour tastes better than plain flour for muffins)
Granulated sugar ½ cup
Baking soda ¼ tsp
Table salt ¼ tsp
Unsalted butter 6 tbsp
Egg 1 no
Vanilla essence 1 tsp
Fresh yogurt 1/3 cup

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Adjust oven rack to upper-middle position. Use liners or grease muffin tin with butter or oil and lightly dust with flour. Use a hand mixer. Mix flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Mix till the flour is moistened, for not more than about ten seconds. Add butter and then egg, vanilla essence and yogurt. Mix till the mixture is light and fluffy. Divide muffin batter evenly among muffin cups.


Ingredients for crumb topping

Granulated sugar 1/3 cup
Powdered milk (non fat) 1/3 cup
Ground cinnamon ¾ tsp
Table salt 1 dash (1/8 tsp)
Unsalted butter 1 stick (8 T)
Cake flour 1 ¾ cup

Take a bowl. Whisk together sugar, powdered milk, cinnamon, salt and butter. Add flour. Use a rubber spatula to mix all the ingredients till it resembles thick dough. Keep it aside for 15 minutes. Divide crumb topping over muffin batter.

Bake till crumbs turn golden in color. Bake for a minimum of 20 minutes. Let it cool on a wire rack for about 15 minutes. Serve while warm. Store rest in airtight container, stays good for 2 days.

Variation: Bake the crumb topping separately and put the crumb topping on top of the frosting.


Crumb cupcake recipe

Baking mini or king-size cupcakes at home with crumb topping is a perfect way to add a sweet surprise to wedding anniversary or birthday party. It's a fun activity to share with kids. Here is an opportunity to express creativity and try out cute, delicious, sweet decorating ideas, different colors and different themes.

At the sight of it, crumb cupcakes and crumb cake muffins may appear similar in shape. But the difference is that cupcakes use cake recipe while muffins are made using bread recipe. So, you have the choice of selecting different types of cupcake cases that are available for different occasions and different crumb cupcake recipes or use muffin cases. Flour 2 cups
Butter or margarine 1 cup
Castor sugar 1 cup
Eggs 4
Lemon 1
Milk 1 tbs

Extract lemon juice. Grate off the rind. Cream the sugar and butter/margarine. Add eggs one at a time. Beat well until frothy. Add the grated lemon rind, lemon juice and milk. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full and sprinkle reserved crumb mixture evenly over the top portion.

Cook at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. Open oven only after 20 minutes. Insert a toothpick into the middle of one and check if it comes out clean and dry. Let the cupcakes cool completely on cooling rack before you decorate them.
