Enlivened with fruits, nuts and sometimes chocolate sauce or strong liqueurs, bread pudding recipes are easy to follow. You can substitute cream for milk in the bread pudding if you want a richer and creamier dessert. Bread pudding can be prepared in advance and refrigerated. You can reheat in a microwave and serve piping hot. You can make a light bread pudding by steaming it in a saucepan of boiling water for about an hour.

Bread pudding recipe

6 slices bread
4 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Break bread slices into pieces and place in a baking dish. Spread melted butter over the bread layer. Mix eggs, milk, sugar and spices and beat well. Pour this mixture over the bread slices. Bake in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes. The top of the bread pudding will become golden brown and the aroma will waft all over the kitchen.

  • You can make variations to the basic recipe for bread pudding. Add ground nutmeg for a gentle whiff of spice.

Chocolate bread pudding

1 loaf bread
3 cups milk
1 cup sugar
¼ cup cream
grated chocolate
vanilla flavor
5 eggs beaten
¼ cup cocoa powder

Place bread pieces in a greased baking dish. Prepare a mix of milk, cream and liqueur. Add sugar and cocoa powder and blend till smooth. Add vanilla flavor. Beat eggs and add to the mixture taking care to mix well. Add in grated chocolate. Pour this mix over the bread pieces. Wait for a few minutes and bake the bread pudding for about 1 hour. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Another variation to the chocolate bread pudding is to use chocolate custard.
