Bedroom furniture selection process takes into account comfort, functional aspect, durability factor and visual appeal. Big or tiny bedrooms, appropriate bedroom furniture can create the mood or feeling you would like to elicit each time you step into your bedroom. Explore bedroom decoration with furniture that suits your tastes and clearly reflects your aesthetic sense.

Bedroom Furniture Planning

Beds, dressing tables and stools, chest of drawers, bedside tables, wardrobes and armories, mirrors and accent furniture pieces such as trunk for the foot of the bed usually form part of bedroom furniture. Take some time off to consider all your needs and the various options available. For example, instead of buying single pieces, you can consider buying complete bedroom furniture set.

The occupants: The furniture requirement in a master bedroom is different from guest or kids or teen bedroom. Choosing the right bedroom furniture keeping in mind the occupants is the most important aspect. It is worth spending on high quality furniture that will last lifetime for the master bedroom. Kids and teens may like theme furniture, the styles and designs need to accommodate the changing needs of the occupants. You can well settle for affordable bedroom furniture that is less costly than high-quality furniture.

The bedroom plan and size: Take into account the total area of the room, number of windows, the interiors, the door size etc. It is a worthwhile attempt to draw up a floor plan of the bedroom. Include furniture arrangement as part of the plan in order to know how well other furniture can be coordinated. This helps to ensure that you select bedroom furniture according to the size of the room, lest you face a situation when a piece of furniture gets stuck just because the width of the door is narrow.

Retain old or total refurbishment: Take stock of the present bedroom furniture, which you would like to retain and the ones that has to be replaced.

Allocation of funds: Includes buying new bedroom furniture as well as renewing existing ones. Determining availability of funds makes it easy to set standards while shopping for bedroom furniture. Maybe you can spend more on furniture with higher functional aspect and select medium quality for furniture that have a temporary or short span usage.

Your personal taste: The furniture material, design and finish will differ according to the style, be it Victorian, traditional, contemporary, transitional or country. Knowing your style and taste makes the process easier to decide the type of furniture that will suit your bedroom. For a simple and elegant look, consider canopy bed. For a contemporary look, platform beds are the best.

The type: Basically, there are three types of bedroom furniture. The classification includes fully assembled pieces, ready to assemble or knockdown furniture or built-in or custom-designed furniture. Each one has its own advantages over the other.

Different bedroom furniture

Beds: From steel to rich wood, there are several kinds of beds in different materials and colors. Check out if you can use your existing mattress set or would you like to get a new mattress altogether. If you tend to spend few hours reading in bed, a slight recline angle on the headboard will be most comfortable.

If you like it low to the ground, a platform bed is the appropriate choice. If the room is small, consider beds with wheels to facilitate easier movement. When shopping for a bed, choose the one that best fits your requirement. Various bed types include king-sized beds, California king-sized beds, adjustable bed, platform bed, air beds, futons, bunk beds, loft beds and waterbeds.

Mattress: In order to get quality sleep, select a mattress that gives comfort, optimal support and is durable. Health experts recommend not too firm or too soft mattress with good depth as compared to soft ones. It should provide enough support for the spine by maintaining the same natural spinal alignment while you sleep. Prefer mattress made of organic wool, organic cotton and pure latex. Lie down on the mattress; turn sides to check how comfortable you feel.

Dressers: Apart from wood, dressers are made in various other materials too. Also termed as chest of drawers or bureau, the purpose of a dresser in the bedroom is mainly to store lingerie, socks or any other discreet item not stored in a closet. The size and height of the dresser determines the number of drawers.

Dressers usually come with 2, 5, 6 or 7 drawers. Check out how much storage space a particular model can provide. The flat surface on top, provides place for placing photographs, flower vases etc. Waist-high dressers have a mirror positioned on top in a vertical position. Even otherwise, you can get a decorative mirror and hang it right on the wall just above the dresser.

Nightstand: Wood or metal nightstands are not only decorative furniture piece but they also serve a purpose. A small table or a cabinet, a nightstand is usually positioned beside a bed. A nightstand is handy to keep anything that may be required during the night. Nightstands with drawers provide storage space. The flat surface on top provides ample space to keep an alarm clock, to put away a book, a glass of water, medicines or a reading lamp.

Bedding and comforter sets: Bedding and comforter sets add color and exuberance to your bedroom. It includes a cover for your comforter or quilt, pillow slips, bed sheets and a bed skirt. Choose the right fabric, texture, print and style that perfectly co-ordinates with the wall and drapes of the room.

Bedroom benches: Bedroom benches can be used as a chair in front of the dressing table, or while reading, provide extra seating anywhere in the house or serve as a footstool too.

Wardrobes: Most houses have built-in wardrobes. If not, buying a custom designed, quality material, stylish wardrobe that will neatly fit into your space and complement bedroom d├ęcor becomes necessary. The choice is selecting a walk-in or freestanding, single or double door wardrobe. Over-sized wardrobes rob space and create a cluttered feeling. Check the amount of hanging space, drawers and shelves that will best serve your requirements.
