Yeast infections are likely to affect three out of four women at least once in their lifetime. It is estimated that 50% of college women in the United States have been diagnosed with at least one yeast infection by the age of 25. Though yeast infection can be easily treated, you must understand how it is caused and what are the possible symptoms of yeast infection.

Nearly 5% of women tend to have chronic yeast infections. Learn more about male yeast infection and yeast infections during pregnancy. Find answers to this embarrassing problem. Are there any home remedies for yeast infection?

Vaginal yeast infection

Vaginal yeast infections are caused due to Candida albicans - tiny organisms that live and multiply within the vagina. Since the pH of the vagina is usually acidic, the yeast organisms do not multiply. Certain conditions such as steroids, oral contraceptives and pregnancy alter the acidic nature of the vagina.

This can cause candidiasis - a condition where the normal balance of bacteria is altered and infection occurs. Other reasons for vaginal yeast infection are stress and illness that can wreak havoc on your immune system. Since yeast organisms thrive on moisture and heat, tight fitting clothes are also common causes of vaginal yeast infection.

Using scented sanitary products and nylon undergarments are other common causes for yeast infection among women. Yeast infection can spread from one sexual partner to the other. A woman who is diabetic is more likely to develop vaginal yeast infections. This can also happen to women who are on antibiotics for a long period of time.

Yeast infection symptoms

The symptoms of yeast infection must not be ignored. If you notice any of these symptoms, chances are that you are suffering from candida yeast infection.

  • White vaginal discharge
  • Itching and burning and redness
  • Swelling of the vulva
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Male yeast infection

It is not uncommon for men to contract yeast infection too. Since this infection is transmitted by direct contact, unprotected intercourse can spread the infection. Prolonged antibiotic use can affect the bacterial composition of the genital area and lead to penile yeast infection.

Diabetic men are more likely to contract yeast infection. Male yeast infection is noticed with symptoms such as red rash or itching and burning at the head of the penis. Anti-fungal creams and ointments work best for male yeast infections.

Yeast infection treatment

Yeast infection treatment includes vaginal creams and suppositories that dissolve and tackle the infection. Topical creams such as clotrimazole or miconazole relieve itching and also treat the yeast infection. You must discuss your problem with a health provider before treating the infection yourself.

It is important to verify that the vaginal discharge and discomfort is due to yeast infection and to rule out infections such as chlamydia, trichomoniasis and gonorrhea. Regular consumption of yogurt and cranberry juice can go a long way in preventing yeast infection. Discontinue use of tampons when you are undergoing treatment for yeast infection. It is advised by many doctors to have the sexual partner checked and treated for yeast infection simultaneously so that there is no repeated instances of infection.

Home remedy for yeast infection

Using a tampon dipped in yogurt is said to be a home remedy for yeast infection. A paste of garlic applied to the affected parts may lead to burning but might be useful in providing a home remedy for yeast infection. Tea tree oil is also said to have curative properties as remedy for yeast infection. Another home remedy for yeast infection is soaking yourself in a warm bath with some vinegar.

Cause of yeast infection

Yeast infection is caused by wearing tight fitting synthetic clothes that trap moisture and heat. This creates a favorable climate for the yeast organisms to grow and multiply. Poor nutrition and change in dietary pattern can cause yeast infections. During times of hormonal changes such as puberty or pregnancy, some women get mild yeast infections. Vaginal yeast infections occur often during hot and humid weather.

Increased estrogen levels during pregnancy and when on oral contraceptives make the vaginal environment conducive for fungal growth and nourishment. Other causes for yeast infection are menopausal thinning of the vaginal wall, cuts and abrasions in the genital area. You can prevent recurrent yeast infections by wearing cotton panties and not wearing very tight clothing. Change out of damp swimming clothes immediately. Do not use feminine hygiene sprays and deodorant sanitary pads or tampons.

Yeast infection pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are increased estrogen levels that cause the vagina to produce more glycogen. This makes it susceptible for the growth of yeast. Yeast infections are more commonly noticed among pregnant women during their second trimester. If a woman has yeast infection, she may pass the infection to the newborn in the form of thrush - white patches in the baby's mouth. If you are pregnant and suspect that you are suffering from symptoms of yeast infection, meet your health provider at once.
