Warm bamboo massage is a unique way of revitalizing and de- stressing the body with the help of smooth bamboo pieces. Bamboo massage technique has the amazing ability to work on deeper tissues. Bamboo massage involves using hollow organically-treated bamboo canes of varying lengths and diameters for massage. They are either heated or used at room temperature.

There is an interesting story associated with the origin of bamboo massage. Though bamboo massage has its roots in South East Asia, it was introduced to the West by a therapist Nathalie Cecilia. During one of the massage sessions, her client kept on requesting for deeper strokes. Unable to bear the stress on her arms and wrist, she picked up the bamboo stalk lying in place and glided them on his back to create a deeper impact. This technique was instantly liked by the client as it gave him much needed relief. Realizing the benefits of adopting bamboo stalks for massaging, she developed and nurtured the bamboo massage technique and it is now an increasingly sought-after relaxation procedure.

How it works ?

In bamboo massage, unlike conventional method where hands are used to massage, smooth bamboo stalks are rolled on the body to provide gentle pressure. These bamboo sticks are lightly heated before use. The client's body is lubricated with essential oils to facilitate smooth gliding strokes. Different sizes of bamboo sticks are used for different muscle groups. Longer ones are used for back and shoulders whereas smaller versions are useful for feet and arms. The surface of the bamboo stalks are naturally lined with silica crystals. When warmed, these crystals release an electric charge that comes in contact with the body's electromagnetic field. This kind of heat along with the pressure of the stalks aids in detoxification of the body bestowing a sense of an overall well being.

The therapist can go in for a variety of massage options such as Swedish, deep tissue, lymphatic drainage or neuromuscular therapy. Used as an extension of the hands, the masseur can locate tension spots and dissolve knots and trigger spots. The muscles are stretched, kneaded and palpated to relieve tension and muscular dysfunction.

Benefits of bamboo massage

  • The bamboo canes work on the deeper layers of the muscles and relax the body completely. The massage alleviates stress and stiffness in the body and improves lymphatic drainage. The warmth of the bamboo canes allow deeper penetration and hence stimulate the muscle tissues thoroughly.

  • Bamboo massage promotes good circulation and regulates the lymph flow. Most modern day diseases are stress related. Stress for prolonged period shrinks the vessels and affects the circulatory systems. Soothing bamboo massage boosts the circulation and flushes the body of metabolic waste.

  • Apart from therapeutic uses, bamboo massage also works wonders on skin tone. Gentle kneading with smooth bamboo stalks relaxes and revives skin elasticity and reduces cellulite.

  • Bamboo massage therapy is highly recommended for addressing chronic body pain, headaches, migraines, and other conditions. It is also beneficial for those associated with intense physical activity such as athletes due to its ability to work on deeper tissues. It also aids recovery from soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains. This massage form releases endorphins to promote relaxation and pain reduction

  • Bamboo has the ability to hold heat for long and the bamboo stalks can cover greater surface area making it a highly pleasurable massage. They are light and flexible yet firm at the same time making them highly ideal for massage.

  • Environmental friendly bamboo stalks are not only good on the client's body; they are masseur-friendly too. Unlike conventional method where the hands of the masseur are strained with massage movements, bamboo stalks take away most of the pressure from the masseur's hand.

Precautions

Hot Bamboo Massage, in spite of its amazing benefits, may not suit everyone. Pregnant women, those suffering high blood pressure, heart disease, skin disorders, open sores/wounds, and cancer patients are advised to stay away from hot bamboo massages.

Those who are sensitive to heat should discuss the temperature preference with the therapist before beginning the session. Request the massage therapist to adjust the temperature to suit your preference.
